The papers consist chiefly of letters containing family news. Of interest is a letter, 1852, from William S. Forbes to Murray Forbes requesting permission to continue his medical studies with Dr. Mutter, a Philadelphia surgeon. Also included is a copy of a bill, 1821, sent to Zacharia Vowles dealing with a dispute between Francis Thornton and Robert Dunbar.

Thomas Dent Mütter, Philadelphia, Pa., surgeon and teacher, was bornin Richmond, Va., on 9 Mar. 1811. He received an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1831, then studied medicine in Europe. In 1841, during the reorganization of Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Mütter became professor of surgery there and held that post until ill health forced him to resign it in 1856.
